Online Classes

What do you feel the advantages/ disadvantages are to taking online classes?

"For me the advantages were that I was able to work on it anywhere that had Internet access. I could also work on it at my own pace. All my work was due for that week on Saturday at midnight so it was easy to keep track of the due dates. For me the disadvantages were that the only way to communicate with the teacher was through email or phone. Therefore, sometimes they would take longer to answer me back. Additionally, computers tend to have tech issues at the wrong times, creating conflicts." -Zac Bagnall (JTHS '12)

"The advantages of taking an online class were that you get to learn the information at your own pace and and have a week or more to do assignments. The disadvantages are that sometimes you forget about it because you don't have to go to the class." -Karl Pappacena (JTHS '12)

What is your opinion of online classes? Are they easier or harder? Do you prefer online classes?
"It all depends on what class you are taking online. After taking classes both online and in class, I prefer in class because I learn better that way. However, everyone is different so it really depends on your learning style." -Zac Bagnall (JTHS '12)

What is a hybrid class?
"A hybrid class is both an online and in-class style course. In my case, I took a hybrid Spanish class and on Mondays we would meet for lecture and on Wednesdays we would have assignments due in blackboard." -Karla Madrigal (JTHS '13)

What are the advantages/disadvantages to taking a hybrid class?
"I think the advantages would be only meeting for lecture once a week offers more free time and you become more equipped with using your school's technology (at my school: blackboard, canvas, etc.). Some disadvantages might include not really becoming aware of the material because you're not in lecture as much and not always staying up to date with deadlines because you might not be around classmates and professors as much to be reminded." -Karla Madrigal (JTHS '13)

If given the choice between taking a course online, hybrid, or in-class which would you choose and why?
"Personally, I would say an in-class course because you get so much more out of it and you get a lot more explained to you in person versus over a computer screen. Ultimately though, I am glad that I got to experience all three and if you're curious to try one, do it! That's what college is for!" -Karla Madrigal (JTHS '13)

Do you think online classes are more beneficial for athletes than in-class classes and why?
I think online classes are indeed beneficial for athletes because you don't always have to be in class. You can get home from practices or games and do the homework then. It helps because it gives you more time for your schoolwork in a way. -Karl Pappacena (JTHS '12)
